Letter of Interest for Potential Preceptors for PNP-Acute Care Students

Dear Potential Preceptor:
Have you been looking for a future colleague or two? Is your practice growing and you know there is or will be room for additional NP work? Have you been trying to recruit a PNP-AC to the subspecialty practice? Are you looking for ways to mentor future colleagues? Then perhaps it is time to consider becoming a PNP-AC preceptor. We are looking for interest PNP-AC’s who would consider precepting a PNP-AC student. The student could come to your work place and spend a varied number of clinical management hours with you in your subspecialty

What do you need to be a preceptor?
• Preceptor would be required to have a be certified as a CPNP (preferably PNP-AC)
• Minimum of one year PNP experience in acute care management
• Work part or full time in an acute care PNP position

How many students could be precepted at a time?
• One student at a time

How many hours will the student require for preceptorship?
• Hours can vary depending on the subspecialty (range 20 -150hrs)

Who will handle the contracts and legal paperwork?
• All hospital/subspecialty group contracts and legal paperwork would be a responsibility of the Program the student attends and would need to be in place prior to the student’s rotation.

What would the student be able to do while in their preceptorship?
• Depending on the subspecialty some of these may not apply
• Learning experiences should include most of the following:
o synthesize didactic course work with patient management experiences
o provide outpatient follow-up clinic experiences (subspecialty only)
o perform history & physicals
o admit, transfer, and discharge hospital patients
o present patient in rounds
o write or dictate (daily progress, H&P, transfer & discharge summaries, and procedure) notes
o order diagnostic studies and discuss their interpretation
o write orders and match all orders to patient problems
o write prescriptions (demos only)
o perform various procedural skills
o communicate daily with the patient & family
o provide patient and family education
o relate the role of the PNP-AC in the hospital setting
o in surgical subspecialties the student is not expected to be in the operating room unless the PNP on the service are in the OR as part of their scope of practice
o attend subspecialty related educational meetings/conferences (on site or local)
