nfl mock draft 2012

49ers,By Cindy Boren A couple of things quickly zoomed through the mind of Illinois wide receiver AJ Jenkins when the San Francisco 49ers called to say he was their first-round pick in the NFL Draft. It was a joke. It was crazy. It certainly was a surprise.

nfl draft 2012Foiled again … except that, according to a report from Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, St. Louis had Illinois wide receiver AJ Jenkins rated as highly as Blackmon. "League sources told the Post-Dispatch on Thursday afternoon that the Rams

andrew luck We have gathered here today to remember the life of AJ Jenkins as the favorite player of one Brick Top. AJ Jenkins is a proud Illini, strong and true, who wore proudly the orange and the blue. He graced Memorial Stadium with his amazing went 1-2 to the Colts and Redskins on Thursday night, the draft at Radio City Music Hall turned into a deal-a-thon. Through the first seven picks, only Indianapolis kept its original draft spot, and a total of eight trades were made in first round.

The Browns, Jaguars, Cowboys and Eagles all traded up to get players they coveted. The Vikings dropped a spot and still came away with the guy they wanted.

Credit the rookie wage scale for so much buying and selling so early, with general managers making last-minute moves knowing that extravagant salaries for top picks have been replaced by a compensation plan.

Before NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell opened the draft, Minnesota swapped its No. 3 choice for Cleveland's No. 4 pick, with the Vikings also getting fourth, fifth and seventh rounders. After the Browns went for Alabama running back Trent Richardson, and before the Vikings took tackle Matt Kalil, Florida neighbors Tampa Bay and Jacksonville swung a deal.

Cleveland coach Pat Shurmur said the Browns were convinced a team would leapfrog them to take Richardson, so they pulled the trigger on the 4-for-1 trade.

"Unfortunately we had to make a little trade to secure the pick," Shurmur said. "We knew as we went through the process that he was our guy and so we did what we had to do to secure it. We had pretty good knowledge that there were teams behind that wanted him as well, so we gave up a couple of picks to make sure we got him. We're thrilled a bunch about Trent."

The Jaguars moved up to No. 5 from No. 7 and grabbed wide receiver Justin Blackmon. The Buccaneers, at No. 7, chose Alabama safety Mark Barron, and also acquired the Jaguars' fourth-round choice.

The St. Louis Rams made a second trade of their first-round pick. The Rams traded away the No. 2 overall pick to the Washington Redskins last month, and were set to select sixth. But Dallas traded its No. 14 choice and a second-rounder to the Rams and grabbed LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne with No. 6.

the Bruins won Caps Game 7 facts

the Bruins won  Caps Game 7 facts Instead, the Washington Capitals killed off this potential threequel in Game 7 of the first round on April 25. With their 2-1 overtime win, the Capitals made the Flyers' Stanley Cup route a lot clearer without the Bruins around for once.

If the Bruins won, they would have faced the Flyers again if the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils won their Game 7's on April 26. But if Boston prevailed, Philadelphia really would have needed either New York or the Florida Panthers to lose to avoid the Rangers in the next round. Yet given how the Bruins have made life difficult for the Flyers in the last few years, it would have been just like them to stick around and put a wrench into things again.

However, the Capitals did just what the Flyers did in 2010 - win a Game 7 in Boston. Of course, Washington didn't need to rally from a 3-0 series deficit to do it, and Philadelphia didn't need overtime to win its Game 7 two years ago. But the Capitals did forge a Cinderella story of their own, as they recovered from a mostly abysmal regular season to become clutch in the playoffs - unlike the Stanley Cup favored Capitals of the last several postseasons.

Tim Thomas stole the Stanley Cup for the Bruins last year, yet he was outdone by new Washington star Braden Holtby. After years of uncertainty at goal, the Capitals suddenly have someone to rely on in former third-stringer Holtby - and if Washington can fix that fatal flaw, surely Philadelphia can as well.

At the least, the Flyers won't have to deal with Thomas or the Bruins in the meantime, as this will be their first postseason apart since 2009. The memories of Philadelphia's 3-0 rally in 2010 and its much uglier 4-0 sweep-out in 2011 won't hang over these playoffs - as its biggest psychological obstacle left is that 0-6 record this year against New York.

Yet because of the Capitals' upset, the Flyers and Rangers now won't meet until the conference finals, which is just what Philadelphia needed. What's more, the Ottawa Senators still have designs on knocking the Rangers out early too - and if that happens, the Flyers will actually host Game 1 of the second round. It might even come against the Capitals themselves - so hopefully Philadelphia won't live to regret rooting for Washington over Boston.

For now, the Capitals' upset is a gift, as the Flyers can breathe a little easier without the Bruins to get in the way anymore. No matter what, there will be a new Stanley Cup champion in 2012 - and with every upset, Philadelphia's hopes to be that champion are rising a little higher.

mad cow disease on video - what is it?

Mad cow disease has been detected in a cow in California, the first time since 2006 that the deadly disease has surfaced in the U.S.

What does that mean for those of us who might want to eat a burger, or drink a glass of milk? The food supply is safe, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Tuesday. Here's a quick rundown of what we know now. For more on mad cow, listen to Jim Culler, director of the UC Davis Food Safety Lab, on today's All Things Considered.

How can the USDA say this doesn't threaten safety of the food supply?

There are two reasons.

The first is that the cow in question wasn't destined for the food supply. Its carcass had been sent to a rendering plant in California. Those carcasses are typically used for pet food or industrial uses.

The second is that this cow had a rare form of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, mad cow's official name, that is caused by a spontaneous mutation. That's different than getting the disease from eating feed made out of bone and tissue from infected cattle, which caused the outbreaks in England in the 1980s and 1990s.

How was this case of mad cow found?

The cow was selected for random testing at Baker Commodities in Hanford., Calif., an official there told the Associated Press.

It's part of a testing program mandated by the USDA after mad cow disease was first discovered in the United States in 2003.

The USDA randomly tests about 40,000 cattle per year. That's just a tiny percentage of the 34 million cattle slaughtered in the U.S. in 2011. But the testing is supposed to focus on older cattle or sick cattle most likely to be infected.

This case brings the mad cow count in the United States up to four. That includes the first case, in Washington state in 2003; one cow in Texas in 2005; and one in Alabama in 2006.

What causes mad cow disease?

It's caused by prions, weird mutant proteins that are found in brain and spinal tissue. They're responsible for other diseases in animals, and the human version of mad cow, called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. All these diseases slowly destroy brain tissue, and are fatal. There's no treatment.

Prions were first discovered by neurologist Stanley Prusiner in the 1980s. They remain mysterious, and there's no consensus on what causes them to form.

How do people get infected?

People can get Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease from spontaneous mutations of proteins in the nervous system. Or they can get it from eating meat from an infected cow. That's what happened in the United Kingdom. More than 150 people died of the disease there in the 1980s and 1990s. Researchers eventually figured out that they got sick from eating the meat of infected cattle.

Why is that less of a threat now?

The U.S. and other countries have stopped using high-risk cattle parts in animal feed, including pet food. That includes parts from older animals, and brain and spinal tissue. Feed was considered a key cause of the British mad cow epidemic.

Feed bans are thought to be responsible for reducing the number of cases of mad cow worldwide from 37,311 in 1992 to 29 in 2011.

Is it possible to get mad cow disease from milk?

The milk supply is safe, federal officials say. Prion diseases affect the nervous system, and there's no evidence they've ever been transmitted by drinking milk.

How worried should I be?

Though mad cow disease and C-J disease sound like material from a horror movie, both diseases are very rare. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that mad cow disease affects 0.167 cows per million in the United States.

Washington Capitals completed an improbable seven game upset

Washington Capitals completed an improbable seven-game upset, The Boston Bruins reign as Stanley Cup champions came to an abrupt halt Wednesday night as the Washington Capitals completed an improbable seven-game upset.

Joel Ward slammed home a rebound at 2:57 of overtime to give Washington a 2-1 victory over Boston on Wednesday night, sending the Capitals to the second round of the playoffs and ending the defending Stanley Cup champion Bruins' hopes of a repeat.

Joel Ward pounced on a rebound and buried it past Tim Thomas at 2:57 of overtime to give the visiting Washington Capitals a 2-1 victory over the B's. It capped an exciting, captivating and unpredictable series in which every game was decided by a single goal, something that had never happened in a seven-game series.

Rookie Braden Holtby stopped 31 shots for Washington in Game 7 — the seventh one-goal game of the series. Matt Hendricks scored the Capitals' other goal.

Tyler Seguin scored, and Tim Thomas made 26 saves for Boston.

Naturally, the winning goal was not without controversy. Although goalie Tim Thomas did not protest it, video replays show that Mike Knuble may have interfered with Thomas before the puck entered the net. It won't generate the same controversy as the 1999 Hull-skate-in-the-crease goal, but don't expect Bruins fans to let this one go anytime soon.

It was the first time in NHL history that a playoff series had seven games determined by one goal. Four of the games went to overtime, and two others were decided with less than two minutes left in regulation.

Either way, the NHL will crown a new Stanley Cup champion this season - again. A team hasn't repeated as Cup champs since the Detroit Red Wings turned the trick in 1998, the longest such streak of any of the four major pro sports in North America. The last four champions were eliminated in the first round, and the last time a team still alive in the post-season captured the Cup was in 2003, when the New Jersey Devils took home hockey's top prize. Of all the teams still standing, only the Devils, Rangers and Flyers have ever won the Cup.

Hendricks scored midway through the first period, and Seguin tied it in the second. It stayed that way through a scoreless third, with Washington killing off a penalty in the final 3 minutes to send the game into overtime.

Patrice Bergeron had a chance to win it in the first minute of the extra period, but he couldn't get off a solid shot from Holtby's right. Two minutes later, the Capitals broke into the Boston zone with former Bruin Mike Knuble leading a 2-on-1.

The Devils and Rangers could both be making off-season plans by the end of Thursday. The Devils visit Florida in Game 7 of their first-round series while the Rangers host Ottawa in the deciding game of their series.

Knuble shot, and Thomas left the rebound out where Ward could reach it with his backhander.

It is been a remarkable first round, so much so that the Bruins-Capitals series wasn't even the most memorable series. That distinction, of course, belongs to the Philadelphia Flyers-Pittsburgh Penguins showdown which featured a little bit of everything, save for defence and goaltending - a couple of elements critical to playoff success.

The building fell silent as the Capitals celebrated just their third postseason series win since a run to the Stanley Cup finals in 1998. Some fans littered the ice with debris, but the Bruins waited for the postgame handshake.

Thomas, bringing up the rear, gave Holtby a tap on the shoulder and said, "Great job, kid."

No team has repeated as Stanley Cup champions since the Detroit Red Wings in 1997-98.

The Capitals earned more than 100 points in the previous three seasons, leading the NHL with 121 in 2010, but had little to show for it once the postseason started. They won just two series over that span and have not made it out of the Eastern Conference semifinals since 1998, when they made it to the Stanley Cup finals but were swept by Detroit.

This year's regular season wasn't as successful.

But the playoffs have a chance to be even better.

Entering the postseason as a No. 7 seed, the Capitals won three times in Boston — they also won Games 2 and 5 — to earn a berth in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Their second-round opponent won't be determined until after Game 7s Thursday night between Ottawa and the New York Rangers, and Florida and New Jersey.

The Bruins needed an unprecedented three Game 7s to win the Cup last year, including the 4-0 victory over Vancouver that gave the Original Six franchise its first title since 1972. Thomas also had a shutout in the Game 7 win over Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference finals.

But that streak ended midway through the first period when Carlson shot from right point and Hendricks tipped it past Thomas' right shoulder to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead.

The Bruins tied it with 5:33 left in the second when Holtby kicked Andrew Ference's shot wide to his left to Johnny Boychuk, whose shot trickled through the goalie's pads and into the crease. Seguin dove for it, with two defenders crashing on top of him, and swiped it into the net to make it 1-1.

Notes: Bruins F Rich Peverley took a two-handed shove from Holtby turned around and swung his stick at the goalie before checking his swing and wisely deciding not to follow through. ... The Bruins played a record three Game 7s en route to the Stanley Cup title last year. ... Boychuk skated off late in the game favoring his right shoulder, but returned and drew a penalty on Jason Chimera with 2:26 left in regulation. ... Thomas had shutouts in each of his previous two Game 7 appearances. ... All 18 of Washington's playoff wins in the last four years have been by a rookie goalie.

Hockey fans, enjoy Thursday's action while you can, for it's hard to believe the best is yet to come in the 2012 playoffs.

mad cow disease? Discovered in California

Mad cow disease?  Discovered in California,  The USDA has confirmed that a new case of mad cow disease has been discovered in dairy cow in central California. There is no reason to panic, though. The meat did not enter the food system and the carcass will be destroyed.

The discovery this week of the fourth US case of mad cow disease was one of two things for food safety experts: a validation of a decade-long focused surveillance regime or a lucky break that highlights

This is the fourth known case of mad cow disease in the U.S. since the first was identified in 2003. Here's a brief rundown of the instances of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) found in the U.S.

They're responsible for other diseases in animals, and the human version of mad cow, called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. All these diseases slowly destroy brain tissue, and are fatal. There's no treatment

The government reported a new case of mad cow disease discovered in California - the first in the US in six years. December 23, 2003: A Holstein in Washington state was diagnosed, but it was later discovered that the animal had been imported from Alberta, Canada. As a result over 12 countries stopped buying American beef, the U.S. lost about half of all its exports of the meat.

The USDA has confirmed that a new case of mad cow disease has been discovered in dairy cow in central California. There is no reason to panic, though.June 24, 2005: The USDA announced that it had confirmed that a cow from Texas had suffered from BSE. It was the first case to actually originate stateside.

After a California dairy cow tested positive for mad cow disease, the USDA has been quick to state that the instance does not represent a hazard to human health.March 15, 2006: An infected cow was identified on a farm in Alabama. It was euthanized by a local vet.

There's no need to put down that burger! Fortunately the latest case will not affect U.S. beef, and the disease is not transmitted through dairy products. [USDA]

watch video Obama slow jams the news - you tube
PRESIDENT OBAMA: On July first of this year the interest rate on Stafford student loans, the same loans many of you use to help pay for college, are set to double. That means some hard working students will be paying about a thousand dollars extra just to get their education. So I’ve called on Congress to prevent this from happening. What we’ve said is simple: now is not the time to make school more expensive for our young people.

JIMMY FALLON: Oh yeah. You should listen to the President – or, as I like to call him, the Preezy of the United Steezy…Things are heating up inside of Congress’s chambers, behind all those closed doors. So the president made a few discreet calls across the aisle. He said ‘Hey, let’s get together on this one.” With college getting more expensive, is it enough by itself to satisfy all your collegiate needs? Ah, Pell no!

“If Congress doesn’t act it’s the student who pay. The right and left should join on this, like Kim and Kanye,” sings Tariq Trotter, aka Black Thought.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Now there’s some in Congress who disagree. They say keeping the interest rate low isn’t the way to help our students. They say we should be doing everything we can to pay down the national debt. Well, so long as it doesn’t include taxing billionaires. But their position is that students just have to make this rate increase work. Frankly I don’t buy it.

“The GOP is steady saying ‘No, no no!’ They should find something new to do like Tom Tebow,” sings Tariq.

Following a commercial break, The Roots played Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together,” to re-introduce Obama, who sang the song back in January at a fundraiser. Fallon had a hard time hiding his laughs while subsequently interviewing Obama, de Moraes says:

“Fallon, who’s been giddy since Obama walked out on stage, begins to “interview” Obama. And, by “interview” we mean suggesting Obama deliberately fall while getting off Air Force One because it would be really funny, like the time President George W. Bush choked on the pretzel. Obama says he doesn’t find it funny, but Fallon can’t let it go. They speak a few minutes about the handful of Secret Service “knuckleheads” with the hookers in Cartagena, Columbia, and the press scramble to write lead stories about it, while they move on to some sports references, and Fallon says he really likes Obama’s house -- “it’s a rental,” Obama explains, Fallon giggles.”

Fallon joked about the investigation into the actions of Secret Service members while stationed in Columbia, asking Obama if he had been “having the best time hanging out with the Secret Service,” David Nakamura of 44 said:

Obama was a bit more serious in his response.

“The Secret Service, these guys are incredible,” Obama said, according to the White House press pool report on the interview. “They protect me, they protect our girls. A couple of knuckleheads shouldn’t detract from what they do. What they were thinking, I don’t know. That’s why they’re not there anymore.”

The appearance showed that Obama may be cooler than the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, Chris Cillizza of The Fix said, but that may not be important on election day:

At first glance, the coolness gap between the two parties’ nominees would seem to favor President Obama. After all, who would you rather vote for: the coolest guy in school or Alex P. Keaton? (Yes, we are exaggerating. But, you get the point.)

That cursory glance, however, underestimates the political complexity of the “coolness” factor as it relates to President Obama and his bid for a second term this fall. The reality is that Obama’s “coolness” can (and will) be used against him by Republicans who will seek to paint him as all style no substance — someone who talks a good game but doesn’t deliver.

“If voters think on election day that Obama is the cool one, but Romney is the competent one, Obama will lose,” said Mike Murphy, a California-based Republican media consultant. “We are electing a president to get us out of tough economic times, not a prom king.”

Capitals beat Bruins Play NHL-Record 7th

Capitals beat Bruins Play NHL-Record 7th,  information about burin capital. Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals played seven one-goal games in their first-round playoff series. That's an NHL record.

Joel Ward slammed home a rebound at 2:57 of overtime to give Washington a 2-1 victory over Boston in Game 7 of their first-round playoff series Wednesday night, sending the Capitals to Eastern Conference semifinals and ending the defending Stanley Cup champion Bruins' hopes of a repeat.

No postseason series had ever had even six one-goal games before.

Rookie Braden Holtby stopped 31 shots for Washington in the seventh one-goal game of the series. Matt Hendricks also scored for the Capitals, who barely made the playoffs this year after finishing atop the Eastern Conference in each of the previous two seasons -- and winning just one postseason series combined.

No postseason series had ever had even six one-goal games before.

"It's a nice sense of accomplishment to be able to get over the hump," Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner said. "It's nice to turn the page, and maybe we're writing a new script."

Washington took the lead in the first period when Matt Hendricks tipped John Carlson's shot past Tim Thomas. The Bruins tied it in the second when Tyler Seguin dove under two defenders to sweep a loose puck from the crease into the net.

Tim Thomas made 26 saves for Boston, which was hoping to become the first team to repeat as Stanley Cup champions since the Detroit Red Wings in 1997-98. Tyler Seguin scored the Bruins' only goal.

The third period was scoreless, with the Capitals killing a penalty in the final 3 minutes.

It was the first time in NHL history that a playoff series had seven games determined by one goal. Four of the games went to overtime, and two others were decided with less than two minutes left in regulation.

"It was very close," Boston defenseman Zdeno Chara said. "We shouldn't be disappointed in what we did this season. We just came up short."

Knuble shot, and Thomas left the rebound out where Ward could reach it with his backhander.

"When I saw the puck there, I just took a whack at it," Ward said. "It was a sense of relief, a great accomplishment."

The building fell silent as the Capitals celebrated just their third postseason series win since a run to the Stanley Cup finals in 1998. Some fans littered the ice with debris, but the Bruins waited patiently for the postgame handshake.

Thomas, the reigning Vezina and Conn Smythe Trophy winner, gave Holtby a tap on the shoulder and said, "Great job, kid."

"I'm proud of our team against the defending Stanley Cup champs," said Holtby, a third-stringer making his playoff debut because of injuries to Tomas Vokoun and Michal Neuvirth. "I don't get rattled. It's one of the things I learned: To be able to get to this level you have to be like that."

florida panthers at New Jersey Devils - information

florida panthers at New Jersey Devils - information, hockey fans have been showering the ice with the plastic rodents throughout the NHL playoffs. "It's a great part of our identity and something our fans truly enjoy," Panthers' coach, Kevin Dineen, told the Sun Sentinel.

No defenseman has won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, which honors the NHL players for sportsmanship and gentlemanly play, since the 1950s.

Campbell was announced Monday as one of three finalists for the award, which is voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Campbell is considered a strong candidate to become the first defenseman — and only the third ever — since Red Kelly in 1954 to win. Matt Moulson of the Islanders and Edmonton’s Jordan Eberle are the other finalists.

A rain of rats! Florida Panthers hockey fans have been showering the ice with the plastic rodents throughout the NHL playoffs.

"It's a great part of our identity and something our fans truly enjoy," Panthers' coach, Kevin Dineen, told the Sun Sentinel .

Fans were shelling out $5 at the team's store to buy the rats, but they are for sale no more. The NHL asked the Panthers to stop selling the fake vermin --after a few were tossed onto the ice Saturday night.

The winner will be announced June 20 at the NHL awards show held in Las Vegas.
“It’s obviously a great honor. Not many defensemen get it, and I don’t know why,” Campbell said before the Panthers flew to Newark, N.J., for Game 6 of their best-of-7 playoff series against the Devils.

florida panthers at New Jersey Devils - information The hockey tradition started in 1995 when an actual rat -- not the plastic type -- showed up in the locker room. Scott Mellanby, former Panthers' forward, killed the rodent with a hockey stick. That night, the Panthers won and many chalked it up to what they call the "Rat Trick".

Now, South Florida's hockey team is winning again and the rats are back. But the Panthers coach says his team's fans know the rats should only be thrown after the game, not during it. "I think a lot of devils fans buying them and throw them on the ice to try to get us that two-minute penalty," Dineen told the Sun Sentinel.

On social media sites, fans are debating whether it's a tradition worth keeping, or they are playing the blame game and pointing the finger at visiting fans for throwing the rats during Saturday's game.

The man who inspired the tradition even sent a tweet. "Thx for all the tweets about the rats flying again in FLA. Yes it brings a smile to my face. Have to be remembered for something I guess," read Scott Mellanby's tweet .

Heart Attack Grill Victim Customer Collapses - Information

Heart Attack Grill Victim  Customer Collapses - Information. For the second time in two months, a customer at Las Vegas' Heart Attack Grill collapsed mid-meal and was carted off to a hospital.

A Las Vegas woman in her 40s collapsed at the Heart Attack Grill in Las Vegas while dining on a double bypass burger, smoking cigarettes and drinking a margarita. She was found unconscious at the restaurant.
Two months ago, a customer at the same restaurant suffered a heart attack while eating a triple bypass burger. Incidentally, one year ago, the Heart Attack Grill's 575-pound, 29-year-old spokesman died.
This bout of unfortunate events has had little effect on the restaurant's business, in which people remain drawn to the monstrous burgers. The quadruple bypass burger clocks in around 10,000 calories -- Guinness World Records has crowned the burger the most caloric sandwich on Earth.

The female customer, a Las Vegas resident in her 40s, had been devouring a "double bypass burger," puffing on cigarettes, and sipping a margarita when she collapsed Saturday night, the Grill's owner told ABC News.

The Heart Attack Grill has signs that read "This Establishment is Bad for Your Health." "Unlike cigarettes, I have had warnings labels since Day 1 when we opened in 2005 telling people how bad our food is for you," owner Jon Basso tells the Los Angeles Times," I think that skirts any liability we might have."
The woman is currently in recovery.

The woman is recovering from her medical emergency but -- like the man who collapsed at the same Grill in February -- she likely won't be able to sue for her medical bills.

First, it's not yet clear what caused the lady to collapse at the Heart Attack Grill. (That's different from February's collapse, which was determined to be an actual heart attack.)
Next, there's a lack of scientific evidence that eating an artery-clogging hamburger can trigger an imminent heart attack, ABC News reports. But a greasy diet can add to the risk of a heart attack -- along with smoking and other lifestyle factors.

The local Heart Attack Grill outpost watched another customer go down this weekend from health issues that hit in the middle of their meal, necessitating a trip to the hospital. The trauma follows fast on the thick calves of an incident here

Then there's the legal doctrine of assumption of risk -- when someone freely and knowingly accepts the possibility of injury for taking part in an activity.

At the Heart Attack Grill, signs warn customers that "This Establishment is Bad for Your Health." Customers also arguably know what they're biting into when they order a "double bypass burger," which comes with two half-pound burger patties and bacon (with the option of adding even more bacon).

The Heart Attack Grill in Las Vegas, Nevada was the site of an actual heart attack in February, and on Saturday a woman collapsed as the result of the second heart attack at the aptly named restaurant.

The Heart Attack Grill's owner says he hopes the woman who collapsed makes a full recovery. "She was eating, drinking, smoking, laughing, dancing, having fun," he told the Los Angeles Times. "But when you treat your body like that day in and day out, eventually your body is going to give out."

mad cow disease in california

Mad cow disease in California, from two of online media we can see mad cow disease in california is the top stories today, since 1000 years ago mad cow disease is any on this world.

The nation's fourth case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), sometimes referred to as "mad cow disease," has been confirmed in a dairy cow in central California, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Tuesday.

The USDA has confirmed that a case of mad cow disease was found in a California dairy cow. It is the fourth case of mad cow, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), found in U.S. cattle since the first in December 2003. Los Angeles-based Baker Commodities confirmed that the cow was discovered in a Hanford, Calif. transfer station after workers selected the cow for random sampling. The company does not yet know which farm the cow came from.

The carcass was at a Baker Commodities Inc. rendering facility in Hanford, California, according to Executive Vice President Dennis Luckey.
The company renders animal byproducts and had randomly selected the animal for testing last Wednesday, he said.

USDA Chief Veterinary Officer John Clifford said Tuesday afternoon that the cow did not enter the human food chain and that all U.S. meat and dairy supplies are safe. Further mitigating the risk to the public, milk does not transmit BSE.

"We are in the business of removing dead animals from dairies in the Central Valley," he told CNN in a telephone interview. "As part of that program, we participate in the BSE surveillance program."
Public health officials said the risk to public was extremely low.

According to the USDA, the animal's carcass is being held under state authority at a California rendering facility and will be destroyed. "It was never presented for slaughter for human consumption, so at no time presented a risk to the food supply or human health," Clifford said.

The sample was sent to UC Davis for initial testing, which came back inconclusive. It was then sent to the USDA's laboratory in Ames, Iowa, where it tested positive, the agency said.

The carcass was in quarantine Tuesday night. "We're waiting now for USDA to tell us how to dispose of it," Luckey said.

Luckey would not divulge on which farm the animal was found. He said his company tests 1,000 to 2,000 animals a year, which he described as "a small percentage" of the overall number of animals it renders.
Had it been rendered, it could have been turned into an element of a number of products, including chemicals or feed for poultry or livestock, he said.

But it would not likely have spread the disease, since USDA regulations prohibit high-risk parts of the cow, such as brains and spinal cords, from entering the food chain.

Eating contaminated meat or some other animal products from cattle that have bovine spongiform encephalopathy is thought to be the cause of the fatal brain disease in humans that is called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

The fatal disease was blamed for the deaths of 150 people in Britain, where there was an outbreak in the 1980s and 1990s.

In people, symptoms of the disease include psychiatric and behavioral changes, movement deficits, memory disturbances and cognitive impairments.

BSE can cause infected animals to display nervousness or aggression, difficulty in coordination and standing up, decreased milk production or loss of body weight, according to the agency.
It is usually transmitted between cows through the practice of recycling bovine carcasses for meat and bone meal protein, which is fed to other cattle. In this case, the USDA reports that it was a rare form of BSE not likely carried by contaminated feed.

The USDA said it remains confident in the health of the national herd and the safety of beef and dairy products.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the odds of a person contracting mad cow disease, even after consuming contaminated products, are less than one in 10 billion.

California Department of Public Health Director and Public Health Officer Dr. Ron Chapman issued a statement Tuesday saying residents do not need to take any specific precautions.

Unlike most other meat-borne illnesses, such as those caused by E.-coli bacteria, cooking does not kill the infectious agent that causes mad cow disease.

Consumers who wish to exercise extra caution can follow the advice presented by the Web-based consumer advocacy group Consumeraffairs.com, which advises the avoidance of brains, neck bones and beef cheeks, bone marrow and cuts of beef that are sold on the bone. The group also says to choose boneless cuts of meat and ground beef only if it has been ground in the store.

"Evidence shows that our systems and safeguards to prevent BSE are working, as are similar actions taken by countries around the world," said John Clifford, the USDA's chief veterinary officer.

Last year, 29 cases of BSE were reported worldwide, down 99% since the peak of 37,311 cases in 1992. "This is directly attributable to the impact and effectiveness of feed bans as a primary control measure for the disease," he said.

"A case of a single cow with bovine spongiform encephalopathy is not a reason for significant concern on the part of consumers, and there is no reason to believe the beef or milk supply is unsafe," said Sarah Klein, food safety attorney for the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

"If the cow were exposed to the typical strain of BSE via animal feed -- and the government says that's not the case here -- that would have represented a significant failure."

But she said the government would have had a difficult time tracking down other cattle that may have been eaten the same feed because the nation lacks an effective animal ID program.

Oklahoma City bombing - Impact of bombing was worldwide

Oklahoma City bombing - Impact of bombing was worldwide Every year at 9:02 a.m., 168 seconds of silence are observed in memory of the lives that were lost in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995. Families of the victims, survivors, and people affected in some fashion or form, gather together on the hallowed ground to mourn, remember, and be grateful for the ability to move forward beyond tragedy.

Oklahoma City bombing, The Memorial is symbolic of many things to different people. It is proof of life to those who survived that day. It is a serene memorial to loved ones lost to others. It also serves as a teacher to future generations who will have no understanding of what went on as time relentlessly passes. The significance each symbol holds is equally important, and this is why we must continue to remember.

Oklahoma City bombing, It’s certainly true that there are self-promoting media muslims out there who will reliably confirm the Islamophobes’ worst biases against our community as a whole. For example, Asra Nomani penned a piece claiming that muslims should welcome NYPD surveillance, which in my opinion borders on obscene. Another example is Zuhdi Jasser, who is a favorite of the Islamophobia industry for validating broad-brush statements about muslims’ violent nature (Jasser is financially linked to the Clarion Fund which produced the unspeakably hate-filled film The Third Jihad). However, there’s a world of difference between people like these and the ordinary muslims who maintain vigilance against extremism in our homes and masjids.
Oklahoma City wasn’t perpetrated by muslims, but neither is it any excuse to relax our vigilance.

DARK SHADOWS: Jonathan Frid - Original Barnabas, Passes Away

Jonathan Frid was never a fan of the fang aspect of Barnabas Collins and, in an interview with ye editor, admitted that he felt foolish doing that part of the show. The thing that did appeal to him, however, was the "lie" that served as the foundation of the character in (then) present day Collinwood. "It was Barnabas' lie, that he was pretending to be something that he wasn't, which motivated me more than any other aspect of the role. That pretense was something the actor playing Barnabas had to remember all the time. He got the lust for blood every once in a while, but always what preyed on his mind was the lie. And of course it played right into my lie as an actor. I was lying that I was calm and comfortable in the studio, just as Barnabas was lying that he was the calm, comfortable cousin from England. He wasn't at all. He was a sick, unbelievable creep that the world didn't know about."

According to Digital Spy, Canadian actor Jonathan Frid, who originated the role of vampire Barnabas Collins on the daytime soap opera Dark Shadows (a role Johnny Depp plays in the new Tim Burton film) has passed away at the age of 87.
EdGross - 4/19/2012

The show’s setting was Maine — pretty different from the sun-beaten suburb of South Florida – but Depp felt such an affinity for the forlorn Barnabas that he borrowed some of his gestures and phrases when he was young. That connection is intriguing considering the amount of time that Depp would later spend inside the skulls of eccentric lost souls. Frid may have been the bright north star that led Depp into a career of spooky mansions and gothic superstardom, which would explain why Depp was giddy when he met Frid for the first time. Barnabas, Depp pointed out, did not disappoint that day. ”As elegant and magical,” Depp remembered, “as I had always imagined.”

Howitt said his uncle had many different lives — his family, friends, and Dark Shadows — and he managed them effortlessly. “When he came home, he was Uncle Jon. He wasn’t Barnabas Collins.” He remembers Frid bringing home bubble gum collectible cards and a Dark Shadows board game at Christmas.

The original show is a still cult classic, with fans attending Dark Shadows conventions and spending hundreds of dollars on memorabilia — like the seasons’ DVDs in a collectible coffin-shaped case.

Frid’s family has history in the city. His father Herbert owned Frid Construction and Frid Street — where The Spectator is located — was named after the family.

Bulk Ink System Refill Guide - Printer ink

ink cartridges bulk
bulk ink printers

Bulk Ink System Refill Guide

After using the printer for a time, it will be necessary to replenish the ink spent from previous prints. One option is to replace the entire cartridge, while another is to use the Bulk Ink system to refill and reuse your ink cartridges. (The Bulk Ink System is SOLD SEPARATELY)

Standard ink cartridges (included with the PrismJET DT) are NOT refillable. ONLY the Bulk Ink System Cartridges can be refilled.

Required Items:
PrismJET DT Bulk Ink System Refill Kit, containing:
A)Reusable Ink Cartridges
B)8 bottles of refill ink (all colors)
C)8 Ink syringes
D)Reusable cartridge chip Reset tool

Refill Steps:

Step 1:
The printer will flash the Ink Button on the PrismJET DT’s control panel when it is out of ink. Press this button once to prepare the DT to change/refill your cartridge.

Step 2:
The print head will move to the left and then park on the right, under the sticker showing your color spots. An LED light will show which ink needs to be refilled. Lift the Plexiglas cover to allow you to reach the print head, then press the Grey cover button to flip the top cover of the print head up, exposing the ink cartridges.
Bulk

Step 3:
With the top cover flipped open, you will see all 8 individual cartridges. Press the Cartridge clip at the top of the cartridge to release it from being locked in its place. Then lift the entire cartridge straight up to remove it from the print head. After removing it, you will be able to remove the cartridge plug to open the cartridge up and refill ink.
Step

Step 4:
Set the cartridge down on a table with paper towels to catch any straying ink. Confirm the color of the ink you are grabbing is the exact type in the cartridge. Accidently putting the wrong color will ruin the cartridge (This is even the case with similar colors, such as Magenta versus Light Magenta). This is also the case for each individual syringe. Using a single syringe for more than one color ink will cause color contamination, ruining your print quality.

NOTE:
You might notice that the ink cartridge is not completely depleted of ink. This is a normal and intentional setting of the printer. If the cartridge spends all of the ink in it, and is left bone dry, this will cause the cartridge to be unusable, even for refillable cartridges.

Step 5:
Remove the cap from the bottle of the ink. Insert the syringe into the opening, making sure the needle is below the surface of the ink. Draw the plunger of the syringe back, and suck up about 10-12 ml of ink.

Step 6:
After removing the plug from the cartridge, insert the syringe all the way down into the cartridge. Slowly inject the cartridge with ink. Fill the ink close to the top, but make sure not to overfill the cartridge.

After filling the cartridge, return the plug to the ink cartridge. Softly shake the cartridge, to ensure no ink bubbles are trapped within the ink. Thoroughly clean the needle of the syringe, and be sure to store it in a sealed plastic zip lock bag. (It is a good practice to store the syringes in groups together, labeled, so that they are not mixed up. For instance, put All the “light” colors and orange in one bag, and keep your standard CMYK colored syringes in a separate bag. )

Printer Ink Cartridges for Inkjet
Step 7:
Place the chip of the ink cartridge into the chip reset tool, making sure the prongs of the reset tool are pressing against the chip. The light indicator of the reset tool will flash green and red. When the light turns solid green, then the chip is reset, and the cartridge is ready to be loaded into the print head again.

Step 8:
Insert the ink cartridge straight down back into the print head. Be careful to use even pressure on the front and the back of the cartridge, so that you do not accidently damage the Cartridge seal as up reinsert it. The Chip on the cartridge will fit snuggly against the prongs of the print head. The cartridge clip will lock into place when the cartridge is inserted completely.

Step 9:
Close the top cover of the print head again. It should clip into place. Close the Plexiglas hood, and press the Ink Button on the control panel of the PrismJET DT. The DT will initialize the print head, and check ink levels. At this point, you are done refilling your ink, and should be ready to start a new print.

If you ran out of ink mid-print, unfortunately, that job is wasted. There is no way for the printer to continue on a job that stopped mid print due to being out of ink.

NOTE:If, after refilling a cartridge, the PrismJET DT is still showing that that cartridge is empty, it could be that the cartridge was not loaded correctly. Perhaps the prongs of the print head are not making a good contact on the chip of the cartridge. In that case, simply press the Ink Button on the control panel, take the recently refilled cartridge out, and then insert it back into the print head. Close the print head cover again, and the Plexiglas hood, press the Ink button to reinitialize, to see if this corrects your issue.

formal letter format

Formal letter format. The one thing you want as an outcome of sending your letter is for it to get to a person who can action it. So that means finding out a real name of a person rather than just sending it to a department or to a company hoping that it will get somewhere. So find a name and address both the letter and the envelope to this person and the department or section of the company concerned.

When writing your letter it should be quite direct and come to the point quite quickly. A long rambling letter may be put to one side to be actioned at a later date so it should be factual in content especially if you are making a letter of complaint. Get to the point fast.

At the end of the letter summarize again your main points and what action you want to take place. This can be to confirm they have received your letter for example or to telephone you.

Whatever state of mind you are in especially if you are writing a formal letter of complaint you should leave all emotions out of the letter and just stick to the facts. If not, a few days later after you have calmed down you may wish you have never written it in the first place !

Here is a format

you can use for writing formal letters. We have added examples within this but the main structure remains the same.

Your exact street address
Your state and zip code

Today’s date
The name of the person you are writing to (first name and surname)
Their company name
Company department
Company address and zip code

Dear salutation (this can be Dear Mr. Smith – if you have the name of the person just put Dear (surname) and don’t include their first name) or Dear sir
First paragraph – in the first paragraph make it short at maybe one or two sentences. This should summarize exactly why you are writing to the person concerned.

Letter Body – this will have additional facts and information about your letter and why you are writing.

Closing paragraph – This should summarize the letter and have a call to action which would be you telling the person what you would like them to actually do now they have read your letter. If you want a telephone call then you need to leave your number.

Sign off - Usually this would simply be “Yours sincerely” or simply “Sincerely” if you have addressed a real person’s name in the “Dear Mr x” or “Yours faithfully” if you have addressed the letter as “Dear sir”
