Bulk Ink System Refill Guide

After using the printer for a time, it will be necessary to replenish the ink spent from previous prints. One option is to replace the entire cartridge, while another is to use the Bulk Ink system to refill and reuse your ink cartridges. (The Bulk Ink System is SOLD SEPARATELY)

Standard ink cartridges (included with the PrismJET DT) are NOT refillable. ONLY the Bulk Ink System Cartridges can be refilled.

Required Items:
PrismJET DT Bulk Ink System Refill Kit, containing:
A)Reusable Ink Cartridges
B)8 bottles of refill ink (all colors)
C)8 Ink syringes
D)Reusable cartridge chip Reset tool

Refill Steps:

Step 1:
The printer will flash the Ink Button on the PrismJET DT’s control panel when it is out of ink. Press this button once to prepare the DT to change/refill your cartridge.

Step 2:
The print head will move to the left and then park on the right, under the sticker showing your color spots. An LED light will show which ink needs to be refilled. Lift the Plexiglas cover to allow you to reach the print head, then press the Grey cover button to flip the top cover of the print head up, exposing the ink cartridges.

Step 3:
With the top cover flipped open, you will see all 8 individual cartridges. Press the Cartridge clip at the top of the cartridge to release it from being locked in its place. Then lift the entire cartridge straight up to remove it from the print head. After removing it, you will be able to remove the cartridge plug to open the cartridge up and refill ink.

Step 4:
Set the cartridge down on a table with paper towels to catch any straying ink. Confirm the color of the ink you are grabbing is the exact type in the cartridge. Accidently putting the wrong color will ruin the cartridge (This is even the case with similar colors, such as Magenta versus Light Magenta). This is also the case for each individual syringe. Using a single syringe for more than one color ink will cause color contamination, ruining your print quality.

NOTE:
You might notice that the ink cartridge is not completely depleted of ink. This is a normal and intentional setting of the printer. If the cartridge spends all of the ink in it, and is left bone dry, this will cause the cartridge to be unusable, even for refillable cartridges.

Step 5:
Remove the cap from the bottle of the ink. Insert the syringe into the opening, making sure the needle is below the surface of the ink. Draw the plunger of the syringe back, and suck up about 10-12 ml of ink.

Step 6:
After removing the plug from the cartridge, insert the syringe all the way down into the cartridge. Slowly inject the cartridge with ink. Fill the ink close to the top, but make sure not to overfill the cartridge.

After filling the cartridge, return the plug to the ink cartridge. Softly shake the cartridge, to ensure no ink bubbles are trapped within the ink. Thoroughly clean the needle of the syringe, and be sure to store it in a sealed plastic zip lock bag. (It is a good practice to store the syringes in groups together, labeled, so that they are not mixed up. For instance, put All the “light” colors and orange in one bag, and keep your standard CMYK colored syringes in a separate bag. )

Step 7:
Place the chip of the ink cartridge into the chip reset tool, making sure the prongs of the reset tool are pressing against the chip. The light indicator of the reset tool will flash green and red. When the light turns solid green, then the chip is reset, and the cartridge is ready to be loaded into the print head again.

Step 8:
Insert the ink cartridge straight down back into the print head. Be careful to use even pressure on the front and the back of the cartridge, so that you do not accidently damage the Cartridge seal as up reinsert it. The Chip on the cartridge will fit snuggly against the prongs of the print head. The cartridge clip will lock into place when the cartridge is inserted completely.

Step 9:
Close the top cover of the print head again. It should clip into place. Close the Plexiglas hood, and press the Ink Button on the control panel of the PrismJET DT. The DT will initialize the print head, and check ink levels. At this point, you are done refilling your ink, and should be ready to start a new print.

If you ran out of ink mid-print, unfortunately, that job is wasted. There is no way for the printer to continue on a job that stopped mid print due to being out of ink.

NOTE:If, after refilling a cartridge, the PrismJET DT is still showing that that cartridge is empty, it could be that the cartridge was not loaded correctly. Perhaps the prongs of the print head are not making a good contact on the chip of the cartridge. In that case, simply press the Ink Button on the control panel, take the recently refilled cartridge out, and then insert it back into the print head. Close the print head cover again, and the Plexiglas hood, press the Ink button to reinitialize, to see if this corrects your issue.
