Black Friday 2011: Deals From Walmart, Target, Best Buy and More

While Black Friday is not necessarily the best day of the year to shop, it is still the most ritualistic shopping "holiday" with several stores opening at 12 a.m. Friday (or even earlier) with limited-time deals. An estimated 152 million Americans will be taking part in the retail festivities Friday and during the weekend, up from 138 million last year. Keep in mind that on Black Friday, it's first-come, first-served, so some of these deals will go away once the item is sold out. (Also keep in mind that stores want you to feel pressure to buy. Occupy Wall Street Two Month Anniversary

Occupy Wall Street protesters clogged streets and tied up traffic around the U.S. on Thursday to mark two months since the movement's birth and signal they aren't ready to quit, despite the breakup of many of their encampments by police. Hundreds of people were arrested, most of them in New York.

The confrontations followed early morning arrests in other cities. In Dallas, police evicted dozens of protesters near City Hall, citing health and safety reasons. Eighteen protesters were arrested. Two demonstrators were arrested and about 20 tents removed at the University of California, Berkeley.

The demonstrations – which took place in cities including Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Boston, Washington and Portland, Ore. – were for the most part peaceful. Most of the arrests were for blocking streets, and the traffic disruptions were brief.

Chanting "All day, all week, shut down Wall Street," more than 1,000 protesters gathered near the New York Stock Exchange and sat down in several intersections. Helmeted police officers broke up some of the gatherings, and operations at the stock market were not disrupted.

As darkness fell, a coalition of unions and progressive groups joined Occupy demonstrators in staging rallies at landmark bridges in several U.S. cities to protest joblessness.

In New York, a crowd of several thousand people, led by banner-carrying members of the Service Employees International Union, jammed Manhattan's Foley Square and then marched peacefully across the Brooklyn Bridge on a pedestrian promenade.

As they walked, a powerful light projected the slogan "We are the 99 percent" – a reference to the Americans who aren't super-rich – on the side of a nearby skyscraper. Police officers dressed in wind breakers, rather than riot gear, arrested at least two dozen people who walked out onto the bridges' roadway but otherwise let the marchers pass without incident.

Several weeks ago, an attempt to march across the bridge drew the first significant international attention to the Occupy movement as more than 700 people were arrested.

Thursday's protests came two days after police raided and demolished the encampment at lower Manhattan's Zuccotti Park that had served as headquarters of the Occupy movement and as demonstrators and union allies tried to regain their momentum.

"This is a critical moment for the movement given what happened the other night," said demonstrator Paul Knick, a software engineer from Montclair, N.J. "It seems like there's a concerted effort to stop the movement, and I'm here to make sure that doesn't happen."

At least 300 people were arrested in New York. Some were bloodied during the arrests. One man was taken into custody for throwing liquid, possibly vinegar, into the faces of several police officers, authorities said. Many demonstrators were carrying vinegar as an antidote for pepper spray.

A police officer, Matthew Walters, needed 20 stitches on his hand after he was hit with a piece of thrown glass, police said.

In Los Angeles, about 500 sympathizers marched downtown between the Bank of America tower and Wells Fargo Plaza, chanting, "Banks got bailed out, we got sold out!" More than two dozen people were arrested.

Police arrested 21 demonstrators in Las Vegas, and 20 were led away in plastic handcuffs in Portland, Ore., for sitting down on a bridge. At least a dozen were arrested in St. Louis in the evening after they sat down cross-legged and locked arms in an attempt to block a bridge over the Mississippi River. More were handcuffed for blocking bridges in Philadelphia and Minneapolis.

In Chicago, hundreds of protesters organized by labor and community groups marched toward the Chicago River. They stopped at the river bridge and shut it down to rush-hour traffic. Police officers scrambled to divert cars and pedestrians. People watched the protests from office windows and bus stops.

In Seattle, hundreds of Occupy Seattle and labor demonstrators shut down the University Bridge as part of a national day of action demanding jobs. Traffic was snarled around Seattle's University District as two rallies marched toward the bridge.

Several of the demonstrations coincided with an event planned months earlier by a coalition of unions and liberal groups, including Moveon.org and the SEIU, in which out-of-work people walked over bridges in several cities to protest high unemployment.

The street demonstrations also marked two months since the Occupy movement sprang to life in New York on Sept. 17. They were planned well before police raided a number of encampments over the past few days but were seen by some activists as a way to demonstrate their resolve in the wake of the crackdown.

Thursday's demonstrations around Wall Street brought taxis and delivery trucks to a halt, but police were largely effective at keeping the protests confined to just a few blocks. Officers allowed Wall Street workers through the barricades, but only after checking their IDs.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said police had been expecting as many as 10,000 protesters based on what activists had been saying online. But he said there had been "minimal disruption."

"Most protesters have, in all fairness, acted responsibly," he said after visiting an injured police officer in the hospital.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said officers confiscated metal devices that some demonstrators had apparently planned to use to lock themselves into the entrances to Wall Street businesses.

The demonstration that drew thousands of people to Foley Square in the evening was a rarity in the Occupy movement: Union organizers obtained a permit from the city, and speakers were allowed to use a sound system.

Among the demonstrators arrested in New York was a retired Philadelphia police captain, Ray Lewis, who was taken into custody in his dress uniform. Others included actor and director Andre Gregory, who said he hoped the movement would lead to national action on economic injustice.

"It's a possible beginning of something positive," he said.

Some onlookers applauded the demonstrators from open windows. Others yelled, "Get a job!"

"I don't understand their logic," said Adam Lieberman, as he struggled to navigate police barricades on his way to work at JPMorgan Chase. "When you go into business, you go into business to make as much money as you can. And that's what banks do. They're trying to make a profit."

Gene Williams, a bond trader, joked that he was "one of the bad guys" but said he empathized with the demonstrators: "The fact of the matter is, there is a schism between the rich and the poor, and it's getting wider."

City officials and demonstrators were trying to decide their next step in Philadelphia, where about 100 protesters were under orders to clear out to make way for a long-planned $50 million plaza renovation at City Hall. Union leaders pressed the demonstrators to leave, saying construction jobs were stake.

Star Wars blue ray for New Star Wars

new star wars blue ray
The September 16 release of Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray retails for US$139.99 and $89.99 on Amazon.

Star Wars is an American epic space opera film series conceived by George Lucas. The first film in the series was originally released on May 25, 1977, under the title Star Wars

LucasFilm confirmed the rumors on the internet about the upcoming release of Star Wars: The Complete Saga, with alterations to the films that have outraged fans.

Also included are an altered sound that Ben Kenobi makes in Star Wars (aka A New Hope), according to SlashFilm.com, as well as a digital change to Yoda and the Ewoks, who now blink, thanks to computer-generated digital technology.

Lucas has previously released special editions, adding new scenes and special effects, including the infamous "Hans shoots first" change in the 1997 Star Wars: Special Edition.

Changes George Lucas has made to the films include added dialogue spoken by Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi, specifically his yelling "Noooo!!"

Criticisms about the "tinkering' with the films state that its director has "destroyed the dramatic impact of the most iconic scenes in American film history." Comments online to boycott the Blu-ray package claim that the purchase "sends a message it is okay to mess with the originals."

The 9-disc release includes all six of the films: Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, and Star Wars: The Original Trilogy (Episodes IV - VI).

Bonus features include audio commentary from George Lucas, archival interviews with cast and crew, deleted, extended and alternate scenes, footage of costume turnarounds and concept art.

Star Wars documentaries in the package include A Conversation with the Masters: The Empire Strikes Back 30 Years Later (2010), Star Wars Spoofs (2011) and The Making of Star Wars (1977).

FOREX-Euro boosted, month-end demand

FOREX-Euro boosted by rate expectations, month-end demand

Euro zone flash inflation rises to 2.6 pct year-on-year

* Euro firms broadly as interest rates expected to rise

* Month-end demand helps euro, Irish stress test results due

(Adds comment, details, updates prices)

By Neal Armstrong

LONDON, March 31 (Reuters) - The euro rose broadly on Thursday as above-forecast euro zone inflation cemented the case for higher interest rates from the European Central Bank, though analysts cautioned against a rapid rise in the currency.

Traders said significant quarter-end and fiscal year-end flows were helping to boost the euro, at the expense of the dollar in particular.

Official euro zone estimates showed consumer prices jumped 2.6 percent year-on-year in March, up from 2.4 percent in February and more than market expectations.

They supported comments from European Central Bank policymaker Lorenzo Bini Smaghi who on Wednesday implied the central bank's policy is to gradually raise interest rates. Markets see the tightening cycle starting in April. [ID:nLDE72T1ZS]

"The euro has priced in a lot of good news so it's hard to see it moving rapidly higher, but it can definitely continue on the upside," said Raghav Subbarao, currency analyst at Barclays Capital.

"The ECB wants to show they are concerned about inflation but there are clearly other risks and they have kept the full allotment of open market operations given concerns about financial stability."

Ireland later on Thursday announces the results of stress tests that are expected to signal the effective nationalisation of the entire financial system, but few analysts were expecting a major reaction from the single currency.

"Ireland is not a big risk to the euro as there is no systemic risk thanks to the euro zone rescue fund. Confidence is being driven by the larger euro zone countries," said Manuel Oliveri, currency analyst at UBS in Zurich.

The euro rose 0.6 percent against the dollar EUR= to $1.4220, approaching its 2011 high of $1.4249. Traders cited demand from European central banks, while adding that a break of option barriers at $1.4250 would be needed for further momentum on the upside.

The single currency hit a 10-month high versus the yen EURJPY=R around 117.90 yen.

Given the market's certainty that the ECB will deliver a 25 basis point rate rise next month, analysts said the market's focus was on how far and how fast rates will continue to rise, adding that such forecasts will determine the euro's outlook. "There is nothing in the inflation figures that suggests that the ECB needs to move forward more aggressively and the euro is vulnerable to a repricing of tightening risk once next week's rate hike is out of the way, said Lena Komileva, global head of G10 strategy at BBH.

Departing Berkshire Exec Wants to Start Own Firm

The high-ranking Berkshire Hathaway executive who suddenly resigned this week says he wants to start his own investment firm patterned after Warren Buffett's company.
David Sokol appeared on CNBC Thursday, one day after Buffett announced that Sokol had resigned. Many investors believed that Sokol had been the leading candidate to eventually replace Buffett as Berkshire Hathaway's CEO.
Sokol says he has been thinking of resigning for more than two years, and the time was right now because the Berkshire subsidiaries he oversaw are all in good shape.
Sokol told CNBC he wants to set up "mini Berkshire Hathaway" similar to the investment partnership Buffett set up in the 1960s.
Sokol says he likes to build companies but never aspired to be Berkshire's CEO.

FX DEBT-C$ firm

CANADA FX DEBT-C$ firm after inflation data; jumps against yen

 * Bank of Canada says took part in yen intervention
 * C$ jumps against yen after BoC intervention
 * C$ rises to $1.0167
 * Bonds flat, weighs Libya against rising stocks
 * Canada annual inflation rate eases in February
(Adds details)
TORONTO, March 18 (Reuters) - The Canadian dollar CAD=D4
firmed against the U.S. currency on Friday, taking tame
inflation data in stride, as the focus returned to Japan's
nuclear crisis and a rise in oil prices on the prospect of
possible military action against Libya.
Market watchers also digested actions by the Group of Seven
rich nations to jointly intervene to weaken a soaring yen
JPY=. For more see [ID:nLDE72H19Z].
In a move to calm financial markets grappling with
continued anxiety over the crisis in quake-ravaged Japan, the
Bank of Japan bought billions of dollars, backed up by action
by European central banks. The Bank of Canada confirmed it took
part, as did the U.S. Federal Reserve. [ID:nTZOIEE7TJ]
The amount of yen sold by the Bank of Canada in its
intervention will be reflected in the country's foreign
reserves report in early April, a central bank spokesman said
on Friday.
The Department of Finance releases a monthly update on
foreign currency reserves on the third business day of every
month, making the next release due on April 5.
However, TD Securities analysts noted that Canada's yen
reserves are relatively small at $252 million as of March 3 and
that any movement in the yen versus the Canadian unit is more
likely to be dictated by Fed action than by that of the
Canadian central bank.
"Canada doesn't hold a ton of reserves in JPY, and can only
do so much with CAD/JPY specifically," TD Securities said.
The Canadian dollar recently weakened against the yen, with
one Canadian dollar buying at as little as 78.03 yen on
Thursday, a level not seen since April, 2009.
It jumped as high as 83.21 yen immediately after the Bank
of Canada confirmed it was intervening. CADJPY=
 TAME INFLATION
The currency held overnight gains as Canada's annual
inflation rate in February cooled to 2.2 percent from 2.3
percent in January, just below the consensus forecast of 2.3
percent, and the core rate fell to its lowest level on record
at 0.9 percent. [ID:nSCLIEE7AG]
The Canadian dollar "will probably get buffeted by
geopolitical developments, particularly with things in the
Middle East," said Paul Ferley, assistant chief economist at
Royal Bank of Canada.
Canada's currency, typically influenced by oil prices,
pushed higher as U.S. oil prices CLc1 rose after the United
Nations approved military action to contain Libyan leader
Muammar Gaddafi, heightening tensions in the oil-rich Middle
East. Libya said Friday it would call a cease-fire
. [O/R]
At 9:25 a.m. (1325 GMT), the currency was at C$0.9836 to
the U.S. dollar, or $1.0167, up from Thursday's North American
session close at C$0.9863 to the U.S. dollar, or $1.0139.
Government bonds were flat to mildly lower as developments
in Libya were offset by a rise in global stock markets.
[MKTS/GLOB]
The two-year Canadian government bond CA2YT=RR was off 1
Canadian cent to yield 1.608 percent, while the 10-year bond
CA10YT=RR was unchanged to yield 3.188 percent.
The tame inflation data implies less need for a swift
interest rate hike, analysts said. Overnight index swaps, which
trade based on expectations for the key central bank rate,
showed traders scaled back bets for Bank of Canada rate hikes
in the coming months. BOCWATCH
