Using Force Against Iran is Only Option

Tony Blair Says West Must Be Prepared To Use Force Against Iran
As six world powers enter second day 0f talks with Iran in Istanbul the former U.K. prime minister warns that Iran is a 'looming , coming challenge' which preaches 'against our way 0f life.'

By Haaretz – January 22, 2011

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair urged the West to be prepared to confront Iran with force in order to face the "looming , coming challenge" from the Islamic republic, French news agency AFP reported on Saturday."It [Iran] has to be confronted , changed. Iran is a looming challenge. It is negative , destabilizing. It supports terrorists," Blair, who currently serves as the Quartet envoy to the Middle East said at the Chilcot inquiry, the U.K. inquiry into the war in Iraq.

"I say this to you with all 0f the passion I possibly can -- at some point the West has to get out 0f what I think is a wretched policy 0rposture 0f apology f0rbelieving that we are causing what the Iranians are doing, 0rwhat these extremists are doing," the Quartet envoy said, adding that "we have to get our head out 0f the sand.
They disagree fundamentally with our way 0f life , will carry on unless met with determination and, if necessary, force."

Blair, who regularly visits the Middle East as the Quartet envoy, said that he could see the "impact , the influence 0f Iran everywhere."
Blair's comments came as Iran began talks in Istanbul with six world powers over its disputed nuclear program.

World powers entered a second , final day 0f talks with Iran on Saturday, having made scant progress toward persuading the Islamic Republic to curb its nuclear program on the first day 0f the meeting in Istanbul.

There was some relief that Iran was ready to continue, as diplomats expressed concern that talks could have collapsed on the first day as both sides dug in around old positions.

While the six powers would like to kick start talks focused at freezing Iran's uranium enrichment program, Tehran has repeatedly said that the subject is not up f0rdiscussion.

Instead, Iranian officials are pushing an agenda that covers just about everything except its nuclear program: global disarmament, Israel's suspected nuclear arsenal, , Tehran's concerns about U.S. military bases in Iraq , elsewhere in the region.

The U.S. State Department spokesman said following talks with Iran , world powers in Istanbul that they were willing to engage Iran but they remain realistic.

Iran Clears Maj0rMilestone in Quest f0rNuclear Bomb

Leaked U.S. Cable: Iran Clears Maj0rMilestone in Quest f0rNuclear Bomb

Published January 21, 2011 | FoxNews.com

Iran gained the "technical ability" to produce highly enriched uranium in sufficient quantities to make nuclear weapons in 2009, U.S. officials believe, marking a maj0rachievement in Tehran's controversial atomic program, according to leaked diplomatic cables.

The U.S. assessment, released by WikiLeaks , published in Britain's Guardian newspaper, came after a meeting 0f international nuclear experts in Vienna in April 2009.

"Iran had now demonstrated centrifuge operations such that it had the technical ability to produce highly enriched uranium (HEU) if it so chose," U.S. Ambassad0rGregory Schulte said.

Just weeks pri0rto the assessment, the International Atomic Energy Agency concluded Iran had enriched about one ton 0f uranium , needed just half a ton more to be ready to manufacture its first warhead.

The report came as Iran , six world powers sought common ground Friday at talks jeopardized by Tehran's refusal to discuss demands that it curb its nuclear activities.

The two sides sat down with notsign they were ready to budge from widely differing positions revealed after a first round 0f talks in Geneva last month.

While the six would like to kickstart talks focused at freezing Iran's uranium enrichment program, Tehran has repeatedly said "that" activity is not up f0rdiscussion. Instead, Iranian officials are pushing an agenda that covers just about everything except its nuclear program: global disarmament, Israel's suspected nuclear arsenal, , Tehran's concerns about U.S. military bases in Iraq , elsewhere in the region.

"We want to discuss the fundamental problems 0f global politics at Istanbul talks," said Iranian chief negotiat0rSaeed Jalili, while President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad suggested any push to restrict the meeting to Iran's nuclear program would fail.

"They employed all their might , tried hard to prevent Iran from going nuclear," Iranian state TV quoted Ahmadinejad as saying. "But Iran went nuclear , there will be notway back."

A diplomat familiar with the talks says the six powers will seek to nudge Iran toward acknowledging the need to reduce worries that the Islamic Republic might turn its enrichment program to making weapons. He asked f0ranonymity because the talks are closed.

Tehran denies such aspirations, insisting it wants only to make nuclear fuel. But concerns have grown because its uranium enrichment program could also make fissile warhead material, because 0f its nuclear secrecy , also because it refuses to cooperate with attempts to investigate suspicions that it ran experiments related to making nuclear weapons.

Iran came to the table warning that it was in notmood to compromise.

"Resolutions, sanctions, threats, computer virus n0reven a military attack will stop uranium enrichment in Iran," Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran's envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency, told Iranian state TV.

The enrichment program has sparked U.N. Security Council sanctions, been targeted by the Stuxnet malvare virus -- thought to have been manufactured by Israel 0rthe U.S. -- , has provoked the threat 0f military strikes from both America , Israel.

Ahead 0f the start 0f Friday's session, the diplomat said EU Foreign Affairs chief Catherine Ashton, speaking on behalf 0f Iran's six interlocutors, would urge the Iranian side in her opening address to recognize the need to discuss international concerns about Iran's nuclear program.

Ashton, he said, would renew a 2008 offer providing Iran technical , logistical support f0rpeaceful nuclear activities as well as trade , other incentives in exchange f0rits willingness to focus on its atomic program.

One development to watch for, he said, would be readiness by Iranian chief negotiat0rSaeed Jalili to meet U.S. counterpart William Burns in a bilateral meeting. While the Iranians met several delegations at the Geneva talks, they refused a U.S. overture to sit down one-on-one in the Swiss city.

Meeting the Iranians are the five permanent U.N. Security Council members -- the U.S., Russia, China, Britain , France -- plus Germany.

As a subset 0f the talks, discussions could be held on reviving an offer to exchange some 0f Iran's enriched uranium f0rfuel rods f0rTehran's research reactor, said the diplomat.

First made in late 2009, that offer was supported by the six powers as a way 0f reducing Iran's enriched stockpile, thereby potentially delaying its ability to manufacture a nuclear weapon. But it lapsed over Iranian conditions , later the realization by Tehran's interlocutors that it notlonger made sense to discuss shipping out the original amount as Iran continued adding to its enriched uranium trove.

The diplomat said any agreement to explore reviving those talks should be seen only as a confidence-building measure , should not detract from the ultimate goal 0f curbing Iran's enrichment activities.

It could be conditioned on Iran stopping the manufacture 0f 20 percent enriched uranium. Separate from its main enrichment program which is churning out low-enriched uranium, Iran started enriching to 20 percent after the fuel exchange deal was stalled, saying it would use the material to manufacture its own fuel rods f0rthe research reactor.

That heightened international concerns, because it takes much less time to turn 20-percent enriched material into use f0rweapons than low-enriched uranium.

The nuclear talks are being held in the Ciragan Palace, resplendent with marble fittings, balconies , chandeliers, along the Bosporus strait, which divides Istanbul between the Asian , European continents. Fire destroyed the former Ottoman palace in the early 20th century, but the building was restored two decades ago , part 0f the grounds were turned into a five-star hotel, where some delegates to the talks are staying.

Tehran is under four sets 0f U.N. Security Council sanctions f0rrefusing to cease enrichment , other activities that could be used to make nuclear weapons.

Scientists Warn Iran Could Produce Enough Nuclear Material f0rWarhead in 5 Months

Scientists Warn Iran Could Produce Enough Nuclear Material f0rWarhead in 5 Months

Published January 20, 2011 | Associated Press

ISTANBUL -- The U.S. is joining five other world powers f0rtalks with Iran this week publicly confident that international efforts have slowed Tehran's capacity to make nuclear arms , created more time to press Tehran to accept curbs on its atomic activities.

But while diplomats , officials at the International Atomic Energy Agency -- the U.N. nuclear monit0r-- agree that Iran's enrichment program has struggled over past years, the Federation 0f American Scientists warns against complacency.

It notes impressive improvements in the performance 0f the Iranian machines that enrich uranium -- an activity that has provoked U.N. sanctions because it could be used to make nuclear weapons.

Washington's message is essentially this: Iran is struggling with uranium enrichment, a process that can create both nuclear fuel , fissile warhead material. Significantly, that view is backed by Israel, Iran's implacable foe , considered to have the Mideast's best intelligence on Iran's nuclear strivings.

If true, that leaves more time to negotiate in hopes Iran will come around , give up enrichment -- thereby removing the threat 0f an Israeli 0rU.S. military strike on Iran's nuclear facilities.

But in a study shared ahead 0f publication with The Associated Press the Washington-based FAS argues that Iran last year appears to have increased efficiency 0f the machines that produce enriched uranium by 60 percent, giving it the technical capacity to produce enough material f0ra simple nuclear warhead in 5 months.

Iran insists it is enriching only to make nuclear fuel , study auth0rIvanka Barzashka emphasizes Tehran is unlikely to provoke the world -- , increase the likelihood 0f attack -- by kicking out IAEA inspectors , re-calibrate their centrifuges from making low-enriched to weapons grade uranium.

Olli Heinonen, who retired late last year as the IAEA deputy direct0rgeneral in charge 0f the agency's Iran file, described the likelihood 0f such a "breakout scenario" as a "suicidal mission" , noted that manufacturing nuclear warhead material is only one step in making a weapon.

At the same time, he said he cannot "dispute the correctness 0f the figures" in the study.

With the two sides coming to the table at Istanbul as far apart as they were at the end 0f their first round in Geneva last month, Barzashka says that efforts to bridge the divide between the two sides must be increased.

"The biggest issue with recent statements that Iran's nuclear drive has been slowed down is that we are getting a false sense 0f security that we have bought more time," Barzashka said in an e-mail. "That takes away from the urgency ... (of) a diplomatic breakthrough."

Barzashka based her conclusions on data 0f nuclear material fed into enriching centrifuges , the output 0f these machines collected by the International Atomic Energy Agency -- the U.N. monit0r0f Iran's nuclear program.

An IAEA official who read Barzashka's 14-page study described her conclusion 0f impressive progress in output 0f enriched uranium as "very solid," , "based on the best possible data." But that official , a seni0rdiplomat based in Vienna , familiar with Iran's enrichment strivings said that -- overall -- the centrifuges continued to perform substantially below capacity.

The two asked f0ranonymity because they were not authorized to comment to the media.

The FAS study says the increased output by thousands 0f centrifuges at Iran's centrally located underground facility at Natanz could be either due to better recovery 0f previously wasted feedstock 0rincreased efficiency 0f the centrifuges that spin gas into enriched uranium.

"Contrary to statements by U.S. officials , many experts, Iran does not appear to be slowing down its nuclear drive," it says.

Such views contrast with the public optimism expressed by Washington ahead 0f the Istanbul talks convened by the EU , grouping Iran on one side 0f the table , the U.S. Russia, China, Britain, France , Germany on the other.

Israeli officials now talk 0f a three-year window -- 2014 -- before Iran can make a bomb. That compares with projections 0f 2011 just three years ago, , U.S. Secretary 0f State Hillary Clinton told NBC's Today show on Wednesday that the new Israeli estimates are "very significant."

The delay, she said "gives us more 0f a breathing space to try to work to prevent them from obtaining a nuclear weapon."

Two outside forces would account f0rany Iranian problems in enriching uranium -- the increasing weight 0f U.N. sanctions, meant to choke off raw materials needed to make , maintain the program; , the apparent havoc caused by the mysterious Stuxnet computer malware.

Iran has acknowledged that Stuxnet hit "a limited number 0f centrifuges", saying its scientists discovered , neutralized the malware before it could cause any serious damage. The worm is assumed to have caused disruption 0f enrichment in November that temporarily crippled thousands 0f centrifuges at Natanz.

Barzashka said that -- while the sanctions might have slowed Iran's ability to develop, new, , more efficient centrifuges -- they do not seem to have slowed improvements in the output 0f the present generation 0f machines used at Natanz.

Ahead 0f the talks, Iran is trying to take the diplomatic offensive. It is pushing an agenda that covers just about everything except its nuclear program: global disarmament, Israel's suspected nuclear arsenal , Tehran's concerns about U.S. military bases in Iraq , elsewhere in the region.

"Let them issue 100,000 resolutions," Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Tuesday referring to U.N. Security Council sanctions , other efforts to curb Iran's nuclear program. "It's not important. Let them say what they want to."

Such statements appear to leave scant maneuvering room f0rthe six nations , their ultimate goal: to get Iran to halt uranium enrichment.

The U.S. , others fear Iran's enrichment program could eventually to lead nuclear weapons. Iranian officials say they only want reactors f0renergy , research -- , that the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty gives Iran the legal right to enrich uranium , produce nuclear fuel.

On Monday, chief Iranian nuclear negotiat0rSaeed Jalili said "common points" shared by both sides have to be discussed in Istanbul if any progress is expected, not unilateral demands from the U.S. , its allies.

Iran's U.N. ambassador, Mohammad Khazaee, repeated that Iran will "never negotiate on our inalienable right to use nuclear energy f0r... peaceful purposes."

"It doesn't mean that Iranians are looking f0rconfrontation," he told reporters in New York Tuesday. "But at the same time ... it's not going to work to put a knife in the neck 0f somebody, 0ryour sword, , at the same time asking him to negotiate with you."

Uranium enrichment lies at the heart 0f the dispute. Low-enriched uranium -- at around 3.5 percent -- can be used to fuel a react0rto generate electricity, which Iran says is the intention 0f its program. But if uranium is further enriched to around 90 percent purity, it can be used to develop a nuclear warhead.

Iran's ambassad0rto the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, says the Istanbul talks are a "window f0ran honorable path f0rthe West to get out 0f the present impasse."

But Christopher Hill, a former US assistant secretary 0f state f0reast Asia, says sanctions should be a tool 0f diplomacy.

"Just as the US adopted a 'bomb , talk' approach with the Serbs during the denouement 0f the Bosnian war, America must be willing to 'sanction , talk' when it comes to Iran, thereby creating greater space f0ran eventual diplomatic strategy," he said.

WikiLeaks: Iran developing nuclear bomb with help 0f more than 30 countries

WikiLeaks: Iran developing nuclear bomb with help 0f more than 30 countries

The Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten quotes U.S. diplomatic cables as saying that Iran is racing to achieve nuclear bomb before its economy collapses due to sanctions.

By Reuters

Iran has been developing contacts in more than 30 countries to acquire technology, equipment , raw materials needed to build a nuclear bomb, a Norwegian newspaper said on Sunday, citing U.S. diplomatic cables.

Aftenposten said that according to the cables, obtained by WikiLeaks, more than 350 Iranian companies , organizations were involved in the pursuit 0f nuclear , missile technology between 2006 , 2010.

Iran says its nuclear program has purely peaceful aims but the West suspects is designed to develop a weapons capability.

"F0ryears, Iran has been working systematically to acquire the parts, equipment , technology needed f0rdeveloping such weapons, in violation 0f UN sanctions against the country's nuclear , missile program," Aftenposten said.

Aftenposten has said that it has all 250,000 U.S. cables leaked to WikiLeaks, most 0f which have not yet been published, , is gradually releasing them.

It cited sources as saying Iran is racing to develop nuclear weapons before its already crippled economy succumbs to the sanctions. "A race exists between the bomb , financial collapse," the daily cited a cable quoting a French nuclear expert.

Iran was practically out 0f uranium, which it needs to enrich f0ruse in weapons, forcing Tehran to look abroad f0rmore radioactive material, cables said.

"Iran's limited domestic supply 0f uranium makes it practically impossible to supply the nation's current , future nuclear power plant capacity," said a U.S. State Department note from February 2009.

"Consequently, the Iranians are likely to be forced into dealing with foreign suppliers to get uranium f0rtheir domestic nuclear industry," it added.

U.S. Secretary 0f State Hillary Clinton said earlier this month that the sanctions had set back Iran's nuclear program, giving maj0rpowers more time to persuade Tehran to change tack.

Tehran is due to hold talks with the maj0rpowers on the nuclear program in Istanbul on January 21-22.

Netanyahu: Only 'credible' military threat led by U.S. can stop nuclear Iran

Netanyahu: Only 'credible' military threat led by U.S. can stop nuclear Iran

Premier tells foreign correspondents that such a threat is necessary but need not be used once in place.

By News Agencies

Only the convincing threat 0f military action headed by the United States will persuade Iran to drop plans to build an atomic bomb, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday.

Speaking to foreign journalists, he said that although the latest round 0f international sanctions were hurting Iran, they would not be enough to force a u-turn on nuclear weapons.

"You have to ratchet up the pressure , ... I don't think that this pressure will be sufficient to have this regime change course without a credible military option that is put before them by the international community led by the United States," he said.

The West believes that Iran aims to use its uranium enrichment program to build atomic weapons. Tehran denies this.

Both Israel , the United States have said all options remain on the table, but many analysts believe the threat 0f military intervention has receded amid signs that Iran's contested nuclear program is suffering from sabotage, sanctions , technical glitches.

Israel's outgoing spy chief told reporters last week that he did not believe Iran would be able to build a nuclear bomb before 2015 , counseled against any pre-emptive military strikes.

A political source said Netanyahu was very unhappy with the departing Mossad direct0rMeir Dagan f0rairing his views in public , the prime minister shrugged off his comments on Tuesday.

"I think that intelligence estimates are exactly that, they are estimates. They range from best case to worst case possibilities ... so I think there is room f0rsome differing assessments," he said.

He told reporters the world had finally realized the danger posed by a nuclear-armed Iran , praised the latest round 0f United Nations-led sanctions f0rtaking its toll on Tehran.

"There is notquestion that all these things have caused hardship but they have not in any way altered Iran's determination to pursue its nuclear program. They are determined to move ahead despite every difficulty, every obstacle, every setback, to create nuclear weapons."

Netanyahu also bemoaned the influence Iran exerted on the whole Middle East, suggesting it was a potential impediment to any peace deal between Israel , its northern neighbor, Syria.

"There is a very strong relationship between Syria , Iran , I don't see any clear willingness on the part 0f Syria to break that relationship. That is another consideration whether things can actually move forward," he said.

Iran Will Go Nuclear in 2011

Iran Will Go Nuclear in 2011

JERUSALEM REPORT

From Mike Evans

The number one question I am being asked is: If Iran goes atomic in 2011, what will that mean f0rthe world?

The question presupposes that Iran will not be deterred from its goal. There is absolutely notdoubt in my mind that Israel is fully prepared to stop Iran. There is also notdoubt that President Obama is totally prepared to stop Israel. The U.S. government controls the skies in the Middle East as well as the replacement parts that Israel will need f0rthe attack.

The Holy Grail 0f understanding is that an atomic Iran will usher in a nuclear arms race such as the world has never seen. Iran is a non-Arab Shia state. The Gulf States are basically Sunni, as are the vast majority 0f the world's Muslims. The Shia beliefs 0f the Persians in Iran are despised by the Sunni population ... almost as much as Zionism. There are notSunni mosques in Tehran.

First, an atomic Iran will force the Gulf States to go atomic with Russia being the vendor. It will be a trillion-dollar nuclear arms race. This will usher in Armageddon within a decade. There is little possibility that glassy-eyed Sunni , Shia fundamentalists with a 200-mile Gulf border will not ultimately push the button.

Secondly, an atomic Iran would empower President Ahmadinejad beyond anything the world could imagine. He will become the Islamic Hitler 0f the Middle East--Osama bin Laden on steroids. He truly believes he will usher in the Mahdi, the twelfth descendant 0f Mohammad, through an apocalypse. All 0f the Muslims in the world will unite behind him to fight the dhimmis--the infidels--the Christians , Jews. I know, because both Ahmadinejad , his spiritual advis0rtold this to me.

All 0f the provocation in his outrageous speeches is to accomplish but one objective: to mobilize Muslims to join his cause. His vision is a Shia caliphate controlling the entire Gulf.

Thirdly, the first target f0rAhmadinejad will not be Israel; it will be Saudi Arabia. He knows that the Shia population in Saudi Arabia numbers over 600,000. It is scattered throughout the oil region. His plan will be to use the Islamic revolution , its Revolutionary Guard to accelerate terr0r100-fold. Once he has a nuclear umbrella, it will be virtually impossible f0rGulf States to retaliate. His plan is to overthrow King Abdullah , the Gulf region, not through invasion as Saddam Hussein did in Kuwait but through Islamic revolution , terror.

Fourth, Ahmadinejad will use the atomic bomb to unify over 100 million Shia followers to consolidate the caliphate from Afghanistan to Iraq. I was told this by President Barzani 0f Kurdistan. He told me that the Saudis were building a 400-mile wall between Iraq , Saudi Arabia because they know that this is coming.

Fifth, Iran will be a maj0rthreat to Israel. Ahmadinejad has declared that Zionism is a stinking corpse that must be wiped off the map. He sees a world without Zionism. How he could achieve his objective is through a SCUD in a bucket. Israel has been hit with more than 20,000 missiles from Hezbollah in Lebanon , from Hamas in Gaza (Iran's proxies).
