Do You Underst, the Genetically Modified Food Threat?

Genetically Modified Foods – The Answer to Global Food Shortage?
According to a Government Adviser GM Foods is A Possible Solution

By: The Telegraph – January 24, 2011

Genetically-modified crops could help prevent a future global hunger crisis, the Government's chief scientific adviser said.

Profess0rSir John Beddington said there was notone ''silver bullet'' to the ''enormously serious'' problem 0f feeding the world in the future in the face 0f problems such as climate change, population growth , energy shortages.

He told BBC Breakfast: ''If there are genetically modified (GM) organisms that actually solve problems that we can't solve in other ways, , are shown to be safe from a human health point 0f view, , safe from an environmental point 0f view, , they can solve problems we can't solve otherwise, then we should use them. ''The sort 0f problems I am thinking 0f are new diseases which are likely to come with climate change, problems to do with drought, problems to do with the salination 0f ground, we need organisms that actually address that.''

Sir John was speaking in advance 0f the publication 0f a Government-commissioned report warning that urgent action is needed to avert global hunger on a huge scale in the future.
Factors such as a growing global population, climate change, scarcity 0f water , energy will put massive pressure on food production, the report is expected to warn.

''I don't think we are going to run out (0f food) if we get it right, but the point is, we don't have time to actually relax , say things are fine - in 20 years' time, the world population is going to be sky high, dem, f0rfood, dem, f0rwater, dem, f0renergy, is going to be way up there,'' he said.

Sir John said there were "many solutions" to preventing a hunger crisis, including using current knowledge 0f farming techniques to "significantly improve" the productivity 0f small farmers in Africa. "There is notsilver bullet, we have got to approach this on a lot 0f different fronts," he told BBC Breakfast.

Sir John, who was profess0r0f applied population biology at Imperial College, London, until his appointment as chief scientific adviser in 2008, said the world's population was growing by six million a month.

He said the world will need 40% more food, 30% more water , 50% more energy by the middle 0f the century at a time when climate change will be starting to have serious environmental impacts on the planet.

Sir John said food price rises will hit the poorest hardest unless farming techniques intensify.
He said a mixture 0f solutions is needed to alleviate the problem 0f two billion people worldwide living in hunger.

He has collated a report on future food strategy to be presented to ministers tomorrow, which looks at 40 case studies across Africa , has the input 0f 400 scientists worldwide.
Sir John told BBC Radio 4's Today program: "The population 0f Africa is scheduled to double over the next 20 years. We need to be thinking about making agriculture more effective, dealing with the problems 0f water, dealing with the problem 0f energy.

"There's notone simple solution. GM may be the answer f0rcertain problems.
"The key thing is we are not making any more land, we have got to look f0ra significant , sustainable intensification 0f agriculture. That is going to need a mix 0f solutions.
"If we don't, price increases will hit the poorest, both internationally , within individual societies."
